VIBRATION - WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (WOT) BETWEEN 4000 AND 5000 RPMS - 5.0L VEHICLES WITH AWD BUILT THROUGH 4/29/96

LIGHT TRUCK:

1997 MOUNTAINEER

ISSUE:
A vibration may be noted during hard acceleration (WOT) with engine rpms between 4000 and 5000. This may be caused by the shift speeds of the automatic transmission and flexing between the transfer case and the transmission.

ACTION:
Use the following procedures based on vehicle build dates to install an automatic transmission-to-transfer case brace and/or reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The brace will add stiffness to the transmission-to-transfer case interface and reprogramming the PCM will change the transmission shift speeds. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 3/11/96

1. Install a transmission-to-transfer case brace kit.

2. Refer to the Instruction Sheet included in the kit for installation details.

The Brace Kit (F67Z-7H101-KA) contains the following:

^ One (1) Brace Assembly
^ One (1) Attaching Nut
^ Two (2) Attaching Bolts
^ One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. # 7165)

VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 4/25/96 AT LOUISVILLE AND ST. LOUIS VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 4/29/96

1. Reprogram or replace the PCM using the May, 1996A CD-ROM or later.





2. Use the Application Chart to determine the correct PCM.

NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SERVICE BAY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (SBDS) ARE REQUIRED TO GAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
