Apply Components
DESCRIPTION
There are eight apply devices used to drive or hold the planetary gearset members.
OVERDRIVE BAND
The (A) overdrive band holds the (B) reverse clutch drum in stationary fourth gear and in manual range second gear. This action causes the reverse sun gear to be held in these ranges.
LOW AND REVERSE BAND
The (A) low and reverse band holds the (B) planetary assembly in reverse. It also applies in 1st gear and manual 1 range to provide engine braking.
INTERMEDIATE CLUTCH
The intermediate clutch works with the intermediate one-way clutch to hold the sun gear stationary in second gear. It remains applied in third and fourth gears, but does not transmit power.
FORWARD CLUTCH
The forward clutch couples the forward clutch cylinder and input shaft to the forward sun gear in all forward gears.
DIRECT CLUTCH
The (A) direct clutch couples the input shaft to the (B) planet carrier through the (C) stub shaft in third and fourth gears.
REVERSE CLUTCH
The (A) reverse clutch couples the (B) input shaft to the (C) reverse sun gear, it is applied in reverse range only.
PLANETARY (LOW) ONE-WAY CLUTCH
The (A) planetary (low) one-way clutch is a roller clutch that holds the (B) planetary gearset in first gear, OD, and D ranges. During automatic coasting downshifts into first gear, OD, and D ranges), it freewheels so that there is no engine braking.
INTERMEDIATE ONE-WAY CLUTCH
The (A) intermediate one-way clutch is a roller clutch that works with the (B) intermediate clutch hub to hold the (C) reverse clutch drum and reverse sun gear stationary in second gear during acceleration. It freewheels in third gear and during coasting in second gear, OD, and D ranges.
