This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to provide Powertrain Control Module (PCM) applications.
ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Code P1411 may be stored in memory on some vehicles. This may be caused by California OBD II diagnostics performing a functional test of downstream thermactor air each time the vehicle is driven. The downstream air test is conducted during an idle. During periods of idle operation and high underhood and inlet air temperatures, a slight decrease in thermactor pump efficiency coupled with very high efficiency of a low mileage catalytic converter can result in a MIL illumination and/or code P1411 in memory.
ACTION:
Perform normal diagnostics and reprogram or replace the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and perform the KOER Quick Test under normal garage ambient temperature and underhood temperatures.
2. If the P1411 code is set, perform the secondary air system diagnostics to verify that air is being delivered downstream to the catalyst. Repair if necessary.
3. If DTC P1411 is not set, reprogram or replace the PCM using the latest level CD-ROM update or the following PCM Application Chart listed in this article.
NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SERVICE BAY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (SBDS) ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM. DEALERS WITHOUT SBDS REFER TO THE APPLICATION CHART FOR THE CORRECT PCM.
