ENGINE - 4.0L - TORQUE-TO-YIELD (TTY) CRANKSHAFT DAMPER BOLT - SERVICE TIP

LIGHT TRUCK:
1996 AEROSTAR, EXPLORER, RANGER

ISSUE:
A Torque-to-Yield (TTY) procedure for installation of the crankshaft damper bolt has been developed.

ACTION:
When loosening and installing the crankshaft damper bolt, determine if the crankshaft damper bolt needs to be discarded and refer to the following Service Procedure for tightening procedures.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Whenever a crankshaft bolt is loosened, refer to Figure 1 and using the engine tag number (located on the left valve cover), identify whether the bolt had been torqued using the "old" tightening method or the "new" tightening method.

2. If the "old" procedure was used, torque the bolt to 45 + 5 N.m (33 +/- 4 lb-ft), then rotate 85 +/- 5 degrees to final torque.

3. If the "new" procedure was used, discard the bolt and using a new Bolt (E7RY-6A340-B), torque the bolt to 65 +/- 2 N.m (48 +/- 1.5 lb-ft), then rotate 90 +/- 5 degrees to final torque. Do not reuse this bolt after loosening.
