ISSUE:
An engine stumble and/or intermittent highway speed misfire may be evident on some vehicles. Some 1995 vehicles may feel a slight bump during a 2-1 coastdown shift. These conditions may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM. For a 1-2 coastdown bump concern, follow normal diagnostics as outlined in the transmission Section of the appropriate Service Manual. Repair any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present and transmission hardware concerns. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Confirm the symptoms of an engine stumble or intermittent highway speed misfire and/or a 1-2 coastdown bump. Check decal to verify vehicle does not have the latest calibration. Reprogram the PCM using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the latest level calibration.
2. Road test the vehicle and perform the EEC-V Self Test. Confirm there are no DTCs. If any DTCs appear, refer to the 1995 or 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures.
3. For transmission DTCs, repair all non-transmission DTCs first, then proceed and repair the transmission DTCs as outlined in the Transmission Section of the appropriate Service Manual. If the 2-1 coastdown bump is still present, reprogram the PCM.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
