LIGHT TRUCK:
1995-96 RANGER

ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with a possibility of a no start condition on some vehicles. There may also be the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in memory: P0443, P1443, P1444, P1445.

ACTION:
Use the Quick Check Diagnostic Chart to determine the correct action.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Visually inspect the fuel vapor return hoses, repair, replace or reconnect as required.

2. Check the canister purge wiring harness that connects the purge solenoid for damage from rubbing against the power steering bracket.

3. If damaged, replace the connector assembly. Do not repair or replace the wire terminals in the connector assembly. Use Service Kit -14289- and follow Repair Procedure # 2 listed in the Instruction Sheet included in the kit to splice the wiring pigtails.

4. Fasten wire assembly to the fender apron routed away from the power steering pump assembly. Use the wiring routing template supplied in the kit. Refer to Figure 1.

5. If the terminals in the canister purge flow sensor connector are damaged or defective, replace the connector. Use Service kit F67Z-14289-CA and follow Repair Procedure # 1 in the Instruction Sheet included in the kit.

6. If the fuel pump fuse is blown, check the 20-amp fuse (fuel system/anti-theft) and the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. Replace as required.

7. If the concern still exists, perform the diagnostic procedures found in the 1995/96 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual CD-ROM, December, 1995 update and the following instructional changes that were made since the December CD-ROM publication.

1995 PC/ED MANUAL CHANGES

^ PPT Step HW12; Yes and No action to take after PCM reset - If Code P1443 is still present, GO to Pinpoint Test Step HW20.

^ PPT Step HW13 is actually suppose to be HW15.

^ PPT Step HW22; Is the voltage less than 0.28 volts? Not 0.14 volts.

^ PPT Step HW27; A fault is indicated by a sudden change in voltage (less than 0.28 volts).

1996 PC/ED MANUAL CHANGES

^ PPT HW, under REMEMBER; EVAP canister purge (CANP) solenoid - Purge flow sensor assembly (90987).

^ PPT Step HW7; Pull moderately on the PF SIG, VPWR and PWR GRD wires at the PF sensor vehicle harness connector.

^ PPT Steps HW16 and HW26; Yes action to take after connecting hoses - Complete PCM reset to clear DTC's (refer to Section 2A Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reset). Rerun Quick Test. If DTC P1443 is still present GO to Pinpoint Test Step HWi9.

^ PPT Step HW27; Pull moderately on the VPWR wire at the PF sensor vehicle harness connector - Key On, Engine Running - Note: PF sensor input to the PCM is 0.40 to 4.80 volts - Is PF PID voltage less than 0.40 volts?

^ PPT Step HW27; Yes action to take - For PF PID voltage between 0.20 and 0.40 volts, GO to Pinpoint Test Step HW8. For PF PID voltage less than 0.20 volts, GO to Pinpoint Test Step HW28.

^ PPT Step HW31; Disconnect PF sensor - Inspect for pushed out or bent PF SIG and PWR GRD pins on the mating connectors. Pull moderately on the PF SIG and PWR GRD wires sensor vehicle harness connector. Key On, Engine Running - Note: PF sensor input to the PCM is 0.40 to 4.80 volts.

8. If either the canister purge solenoid or the purge flow sensor has to be replaced, replace them as an assembly (hose, purge valve and flow sensor). Refer to Figure 2.
