Ignition Coil: Service and Repair






Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring from ignition coil.

Removing Ignition Wires At Coil Pack:






3. Remove spark plug wires by squeezing locking tabs to release ignition coil boot retainers.

4. On Explorer and Ranger vehicles equipped with air conditioning, remove air conditioning tube-to-plenum bolt and move tube enough to gain access to ignition coil bolts.

5. Remove ignition coil bolts and remove ignition coil.

Installation
1. Install ignition coil. Tighten ignition coil bolts to 5-7 Nm (45-61 lb.in.).

2. On Explorer and Ranger vehicles equipped with air conditioning, reposition air conditioning tube and secure. Tighten air conditioning tube-to-plenum bolt to 26-32 Nm (20-23 lb.ft.).

3. Connect battery ground cable.

Ignition Coil Bracket Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring from ignition coil.

4. On Explorer and Ranger vehicles equipped with air conditioning, remove air conditioning tube-to-plenum bolt and move tube enough to gain access to ignition coil bolts.

5. Remove ignition coil bolts and remove ignition coil.

6. Remove ignition coil mounting bracket bolts and ignition coil mounting bracket.

Installation
1. Install ignition coil mounting bracket. Tighten ignition coil mounting bracket bolts to 26-32 Nm (20-23 lb.ft.).

2. Install ignition coil. Tighten the ignition coil bolts to 5-7 Nm (45-61 lb.in.).

3. On Explorer and Ranger vehicles equipped with air conditioning, reposition air conditioning tube and secure. Tighten air conditioning tube-to-plenum bolt to 26-32 Nm (20-23 lb.ft.).

4. Install spark plug wires.

5. Connect fuel charging wiring to ignition coil.

6. Connect battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery voltage is removed from the powertrain control module, all learned values will be cleared and reset to predetermined values. When battery voltage is restored to the PCM, the vehicle may exhibit certain driveability concerns. It will be necessary to drive the vehicle to allow the PCM to relearn values for optimum driveability and performance.
