ISSUE:
Some vehicles may experience a hesitation and/or surge at a cruising speed of about 48-64 km/h (30-40 mph) under a light load condition with the engine at normal operating temperature. A combination of a high ambient temperature, high humidity and low volatility fuel condition may aggravate the drive concern.
ACTION:
Use the following service procedure to determine if a new Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with a revised calibration is required. These symptoms can be improved with a revised PCM.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Perform the diagnostic procedure in the 1995-96 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual. Service as required.
2. If the concerns still exist, reprogram the PCM by following Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) reprogramming tool, April 1996 CD-ROM or later. If SBDS is not available, replace the PCM. Dealers with SBDS are required to reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the Application Chart. Only non-SBDS dealers are permitted to replace the PCM. Refer to the Application Chart for correct calibration or part number.
NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SBDS ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
