ISSUE:
An engine stall may occur when the clutch is disengaged after closed throttle engine on a downhill grade. This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration allowing closed loop idle speed control at too high of a vehicle speed.
ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM (EXCEPT ON THE 1995 EXPLORER).
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Confirm the symptoms of an engine stall and/or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Code P1506. Check decal to verify vehicle does not have the latest calibration. Reprogram the PCM using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the latest level calibration. If the vehicle is a 1995 Explorer, replace the PCM with the correct PCM from the Application Chart.
2. Road test the vehicle and perform an EEC-V Self Test. Confirm there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If any DTCs appear, refer to the 1995 or 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
