Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

Vehicle Preparation
^ Key OFF

^ Electrical loads OFF (A/C, Heater, etc.)

^ Engine at normal operating temperature

^ Shift lever in PARK (A/T) or NEUTRAL (M/T)

^ Timing light connected

Procedure
1. Start engine using ignition switch (Do NOT use a remote starter)

2. Disconnect SPOUT connector

3. Check base timing: It should be within ±2° of the specification found on the VECI underhood decal

4. Reconnect SPOUT connector

^ Check for computed timing advance at 1500 RPM

NOTE: If timing is not within specifications, refer to Powertrain Management for Diagnostic Routines.
