Removal and Installation

NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified.

REMOVAL
WARNING: DO NOT SMOKE OR CARRY LIGHTED TOBACCO OR OPEN FLAME OF ANY TYPE WHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR ANY FUEL-RELATED COMPONENTS. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE MIXTURES ARE ALWAYS PRESENT AND CAN BE IGNITED, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. FUEL IN THE FUEL SYSTEM REMAINS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING.

Refer to Engine Service and Repair for procedures on servicing components not detailed here. Service and Repair

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the intake manifold.
3. Remove the timing chains.
4. Remove the exhaust manifolds.

5. Install the Lifting Handles on both ends of the cylinder head.

6. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
^ RH is shown. LH is similar.

CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be replaced with new bolts. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

7. Remove the cylinder head.
8. Discard the head gasket and clean the engine block and cylinder head mating surfaces.

CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the aluminum retainer plate. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

INSTALLATION

1. Position the (A) head gasket over the (B) dowel pins.
^ RH is shown. LH is similar.

CAUTION: Make sure all coolant residue and debris are cleaned from the block surface and cylinder bore.

2. Position the (A) cylinder head over the dowels and onto the (B) head gasket. Loosely install the new (C) cylinder head bolts.
^ RH is shown. LH is similar.

NOTE: The camshaft must be indexed prior to cylinder head installation.

3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in three stages, in the sequence shown.
^ LH is shown. RH is similar.
Stage 1: 37-43 Nm (27-32 ft. lbs.)
Stage 2: Rotate 85-95 degrees
Stage 3: Rotate 85-95 degrees

4. Install the exhaust manifolds.
5. Install the timing chains.
6. Install the intake manifold.
7. Reconnect the battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km ( 10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
