Disassembly

NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified.

1. With the engine on the engine stand, remove the engine wiring harness.

2. Remove the oil pan bolts.

3. Remove the oil pan and the oil pan gasket.

4. Remove the three oil pump screen and cover bolts and the oil pump screen cover and tube.

5. Remove the oil pump screen cover and tube spacer.

6. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube from the left cam cover.

7. Fully loosen the bolts, and remove the left cam cover.
^ Inspect the cam cover gasket and clean the mating surface of the cylinder head.

NOTE: Bolts are a part of the cam cover and are not removed from the cam cover.

8. Remove the crankcase vent connector and hose from the right cam cover.

9. Fully loosen the bolts and remove the right cam cover.
^ Inspect the cam cover gasket, and clean the mating surface of the cylinder head.

NOTE: Bolts are a part of the cam cover and are not removed from the cam cover.

10. Remove the bolts, and set aside the power steering pump.

11. Remove the (A) belt idler pulley bolt and the (B) belt idler pulley.

12. Remove the water pump pulley.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the water pump pulley.

13. Remove the water pump bolts.

14. Remove the (A) water pump from the (B) cylinder block.

15. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
^ Use the Crankshaft Damper Remover to remove the crankshaft pulley.

16. Use the (A), Front Cover Seal Remover to remove the (B) crankshaft front seal.

17. Remove the engine front cover fasteners.

18. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowels.

19. Remove the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft.

20. Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool as shown.

CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.

NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified.

21. Install the Camshaft Holding Tools on the camshafts.

22. Remove the timing chain tensioner bolts and the timing chain tensioners. Remove the timing chain tensioner arms from the dowel pins.

23. Remove the LH and RH timing chains and the crankshaft sprockets.
^ Remove the Crankshaft Holding Tool.
^ Remove the RH timing chain from the camshaft sprocket.
^ Remove the RH timing chain and outer crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft.
^ Repeat for the LH timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.

CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinders heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.

24. Remove the timing chain guides.
^ Remove the timing chain guide bolts.
^ Remove the timing chain guides.

25. Remove the (A) RH exhaust manifold nuts and the(B)exhaust manifold.

26. Remove the RH exhaust manifold gasket.

27. Remove the eight (A) LH exhaust manifold nuts and the (B) exhaust manifold.

28. Remove the LH exhaust manifold gaskets.
29. Clean and inspect the exhaust manifolds.

30. Remove the oil level indicator tube bolt and the oil level indicator tube.

31. Install the Lifting Handles on both ends of the cylinder head.

32. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
^ RH is shown. LH is similar.
^ Remove the cylinder head.

CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be replaced with new bolts. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused. Place cylinder head on a cardboard or wood surface to prevent damage to the joint face.

33. Discard the head gasket and clean the engine block surface.

34. Remove the LH engine mount-to-cylinder block bolts, and remove the engine mount.

35. Remove the RH engine mount-to-cylinder block bolts, and remove the engine mount.

36. Remove the nut and bolts retaining the oil filter adapter and oil filter adapter gasket to the cylinder block.

37. Clean the oil filter adapter gasket surface at the cylinder block.

38. Remove the bolts and the oil pump.

39. Remove the connecting rod cap bolts and the connecting rod cap. Discard the connecting rod cap bolts.

CAUTION: Verify that the connecting rods and rod caps have orientation numbers cast into them. If not, number the connecting rods and rod caps for proper orientation.

NOTE: Steps 39 and 40 are for all eight connecting rods, rod caps and pistons. Only one connecting rod, rod cap and piston is shown.

40. Use the Connecting Rod Guide Tool to push the piston through the top of the cylinder block.

CAUTION: Do not scratch the cylinder walls or crankshaft journals with the connecting rod.

41. Remove and discard the cross-mounted main cap bolts.

42. Remove the ten main bearing cap bolts and the main bearing cap dowel pins.
