A visual inspection is an important part of testing the interior lamps. Check wires for frayed or damaged insulation, loose connections and correct harness routing.
Any problems found in the visual inspection must be corrected before performing further tests of the lighting system. For example, a loose ground strap between the engine and body dash panel can cause an intermittent operation of the lamps and gauges. Inspect and tighten, if necessary, the ground strap retaining screws at the back of the engine and the body dash panel. Any screws or bolts used for attaching the engine-to-body ground strap must have an "S36" finish (zinc plate plus dichromate dip).
1. Verify the vehicle owner's original concern by operating the illuminated entry system to duplicate the condition.
2. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns applies:
VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
MECHANICAL
^ Outside front door handles
ELECTRICAL
^ IP fuse panel Fuses 4(15A), 24(5A), 5(20A) and 3(15A)
^ Damaged illuminated entry actuator
^ Circuitry open/shorted
^ Connectors damaged/corroded
3. If the concern(s) remains after the inspection, determine the symptom(s) and proceed to the following symptom chart. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
