Aft of Axle Fuel Tank
WARNING:
- When draining the fuel from the fuel tank, keep spark, smoking materials, and open flames away from the vehicle.
- The fuel system contains pressurized fuel after the vehicle is shut down and will maintain this pressure for a long period of time.
NOTE: The 55 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank and the 35 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank are similar. Only the 55 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank is illustrated in this procedure.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. On vehicles equipped with dual batteries, use proper cable disconnect procedures.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
2. Perform fuel pressure release.
3. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe and the filler vent tube from the fuel tank.
6. Position the jack under the fuel tank.
7. Remove the fuel tank support strap retaining bolts.
8. Remove the fuel tank support strap retaining nuts.
9. Remove the fuel tank support straps.
10. Partially lower the fuel tank.
11. Disconnect the fuel tubes from the fuel pump.
12. Disconnect the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit electrical connector.
13. Disconnect the hose(s) from the evaporative emission valve.
14. Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.
15. Lower the fuel tank.
16. If the fuel tank is being replaced, transfer the fuel pump, fuel tank sending unit, the evaporative emission valves and the fuel tank pressure sensor to the new fuel tank.
INSTALLATION
1. To install, follow the removal procedure in reverse order.
2. Tighten fuel tank strap retaining nuts to 77-103 Nm (56-75 lb ft).
3. Tighten fuel tank strap retaining bolts to 87-119 Nm (64-88 lb ft).
