Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.






2. Remove the (A) nuts and remove the (B) exhaust manifold heat shield.






3. Remove the exhaust manifold to Three Way Catalytic converter (TWC) nuts.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.






5. Disconnect the downstream HO2S and position it aside.






6. Remove the two TWC bracket bolts.






7. Remove the (A) TWC to muffler inlet pipe bolts and nuts and the (B) TWC. Discard the gasket.

INSTALLATION

1. Inspect the TWC for cracked joints, broken welds and corrosive damage that could result in exhaust system leaks. If necessary, replace the TWC.
2. Position the TWC and install a new exhaust converter outlet gasket between the TWC and the muffler inlet pipe and resonator.






3. Install the two TWC to muffler inlet pipe and resonator bolts and nuts






4. Install the TWC bracket bolts.

NOTE: Apply Antiseize Material F6AZ-9L49AA or equivalent to HO2S threads before installation, as required.






5. Install the downstream HO2S.
6. Lower the vehicle.






7. Install the exhaust manifold to TWC nuts.






8. Install the (A) nuts and the exhaust manifold heat shield.
9. Connect the HO2S electrical connectors.
