Removal and Installation

REMOVAL
1. Remove the lower intake manifold.
2. Remove the valve covers.





3. Remove the eight rocker arm bolts.

NOTE: Make sure to mark the rocker arms and the push rods to ensure that they will be installed in their original positions.





4. Remove the eight rocker arm fulcrums.





5. Remove the eight rocker arms and rocker arm fulcrum guides.
6. Remove the exhaust manifolds.

CAUTION: The exhaust manifold heat shield wrap has sharp edges.





7. Remove the three A/C and power steering bracket bolts and remove the bracket (LH only).





8. Disconnect the two generator electrical connectors (RH only).





9. Remove the transmission oil fill tube bolt from the back of the RH cylinder head.





10. Remove the push rods and mark them so they can be installed in their original locations.





11. Remove the ten cylinder head bolts in the indicated sequence and remove the cylinder head.
^ Discard the old cylinder head bolts.

NOTE: Only the LH cylinder head is equipped with a spark plug wire bracket.

12. Clean and inspect the cylinder head surface.

INSTALLATION
1. Use Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A to clean the cylinder head, intake manifold, valve cover and cylinder head gasket surfaces. Clean the EGR passage with a suitable wire brush and combustion chamber cleaner on the LH cylinder head, chamber number seven.

NOTE: A specially treated composition gasket is used. Do not apply sealer to a composition gasket.





2. Position the head gasket over the two dowel pins.
3. Install the cylinder head on the cylinder block gasket and loosely install the new cylinder head bolts.

NOTE: Only the LH cylinder head is equipped with a spark plug wire bracket.

4. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in three stages.
^ Stage 1: 34-47 Nm (25-35 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: 61-75 Nm (45-55 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 3: 85°-90°.





5. Lubricate and install the push rods in their original locations.
^ Use Motorcraft Super Premium 10W-30 Motor Oil XO-10W-30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C153-E and APISG.

6. Apply engine oil to the top of the valve stem, rocker arm seats, and rocker arms.
^ Use SAE 50 engine oil meeting Ford specification WSE-M2C908-A1.





7. Install the eight rocker arms and rocker arm fulcrum guides.





8. Install the eight rocker arm fulcrums.





9. Install the eight rocker arm bolts.
10. Check the valve clearance.
11. Install the valve cover on the side that is being repaired.





12. Install the transmission oil fill tube bolt at the back of the RH cylinder head.
13. Install the exhaust manifolds.





14. Connect the two generator electrical connectors (RH only).
15. Install the lower intake manifold.
