Installation

NOTE: MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON V as a service fluid.

1. Position and secure the transmission on Hi-Lift Transmission Jack.
- Raise and position the transmission into the vehicle.

CAUTION: During this move, to avoid damage, do not allow the transmission to get into a nose-down position as this will cause the torque converter to move forward and disengage from the pump gear. The converter housing is piloted into position by dowels in the rear of the engine block. The torque converter must rest squarely against the flywheel. This indicates that the converter pilot is not binding in the engine crankshaft.

2. Align the orange balancing marks between the torque converter studs and the flywheel bolt holes.

NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully seated in the transmission before aligning the transmission to the engine.

3. Install the transmission fluid fill tube.

4. Install the transmission oil fill tube bolt on the (RH) side of the cylinder head.

5. Install the six transmission to engine bolts.

6. Remove the torque converter holding tool.

7. Install the transmission mount.
(1) Position the transmission mount.
(2) Position the exhaust pipe bracket.
(3) Install the two transmission mount bolts.

8. Install the rear crossmember.
(1) Position the crossmember.
(2) Install the two crossmember bolts.

9. Install the exhaust, Three Way Converters (TWC).

10. Install the lower crossmember bolts.

11. Install the two transmission mount nuts.
12. Remove H-Lift Transmission Jack.

13 Connect the solenoid body assembly electrical connector.

14. Connect the electrical connectors.
(1) Connect the digital transmission range (DTR) sensor.
(2) Connect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor.
(3) Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

15. Connect the transmission coolant lines.

16. Connect the transmission shift linkage.
17. Install the starter motor.

18. Install the four torque converter nuts.

19. Install the transmission inspection cover.
(1) Position the transmission inspection cover.
(2) Install the two bolts

20. Install the transfer case.

21. Install the rear driveshaft.
(1) Position the driveshaft.
(2) Install the four bolts.

NOTE: To maintain initial Driveshaft balance, align the index marks made during removal.

22. Lower the vehicle.

NOTE: If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by turning on the air suspension switch.

23. Reconnect the battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive system may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy.

24. Fill the transmission with fluid and inspect for proper operation.
- Use FORD MERCON or MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid or equivalent meeting FORD specification.
