Casting Porosity (Holes In Casting)

Occasionally, an axle housing leak may occur through small pockets in the metal. These pockets are caused by gas bubbles in the casting process. This condition is called casting porosity.

CAUTION: In order to keep the axle's sound characteristics, repair the carrier instead of tearing it down.

1. Peen in a small amount of body lead. Seal the pockets with Devcon(R) Aluminum Liquid F2 or equivalent meeting Ford Manufacturing Standard M-3D35A(E).
2. In larger pockets, drill a shallow hole and tap it for a small setscrew. Install the setscrew and seal it with Devcon(R) Aluminum Liquid F2 or equivalent meeting Ford Manufacturing Standard M-3D35A(E).
