Traction-Lok Differential Check

A Traction-Lok differential can be checked for proper operation without removing it from the rear axle housing.

WARNING:
- A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH A TRACTION-LOK DIFFERENTIAL WILL ALWAYS HAVE BOTH WHEELS DRIVING. IF, WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING REPAIRED, ONLY ONE WHEEL IS RAISED OFF THE FLOOR AND THE REAR AXLE IS DRIVEN BY THE ENGINE, THE WHEEL ON THE FLOOR COULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE STAND OR JACK. BE SURE BOTH REAR WHEELS ARE OFF THE FLOOR.
- THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING, JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS.

Raise up one rear wheel and remove the wheel cover. Install the adapter for Traction-Lok Torque Tool on the lug bolts.

Use a torque wrench with the capacity of at least 271 Nm (200 ft lbs) to rotate the axle shaft. Be sure that the transmission is in NEUTRAL, and that one rear wheel is on the floor and the other rear wheel is raised off the floor. The breakaway torque required to start rotation should be at least 27 Nm (20 ft lbs). The initial breakaway torque may be higher than the continuous turning torque.

The axle shaft should turn with even pressure throughout the check without slipping or binding. If the torque reading is less than specified, check the differential case for improper assembly.
