Vehicle Speed Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
2. Remove the VSS retaining bolt.
3. Remove the VSS from the rear axle housing.

INSTALLATION
1. Inspect and clean the magnetized VSS pole piece and make sure it is free from loose metal particles that could cause erratic system operation.

NOTE: Clean the axle mounting surface thoroughly. Use care to prevent dirt from entering the rear axle housing.

2. Replace the VSS O-ring.
3. Lightly lubricate the VSS O-ring with clean motor oil and insert into the rear axle housing mounting hole until it is properly seated. The VSS flange should slide to the mounting surface and make sure the air gap setting is between 0.127-1.14 mm (0.005-0.045 in).

NOTE: Do not apply pressure to the plastic electrical connector while mounting the VSS.

4. Install the VSS retaining bolt and tighten to 34-40 Nm (25-30 lb ft).
5. Connect the VSS electrical connector.
