Ignition Switch: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION
The ignition switch is located on the RH side of the steering column. The ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position without the use of the appropriate ignition key. The ignition switch has four positions:
^ LOCK
^ ACC
^ ON
^ START
The ignition key cannot be removed unless the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. When the ignition key is removed, the steering column lock tab will engage the steering column to lock the steering wheel.

OPERATION
With the ignition switch in the:
LOCK position, all electrical functions are shut off.
ACC position, all of the electrical accessories are functional.
ON position, the instrument cluster warning indicator function check is operational.
START position, the starter circuit is activated to start the engine.
Once the key is released after starting the engine, the ignition switch will spring back into the ON position, disengaging the starter circuit.

NOTE: Vehicles equipped with either a 4EAT or CD4E transaxle, have a shift interlock system. The shift interlock system prevents shifting the transaxle out of the PARK (P) position without depressing the brake pedal when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

The ignition switch lock cylinder engages the ignition switch. The ignition key reminder switch will signal the Central Processing Unit (CPU) when the ignition key is left in the ignition switch lock cylinder and either front door is opened.
