LL4 Check Speed Sensor/Tone Ring Air Gap
LL4 CHECK THE SPEED SENSOR/TONE RING AIR GAP- Remove the speed sensor from the front wheel hub and spindle.
- Inspect the mounting boss and speed sensor mounting plate for any metal flash or debris. Clean as necessary.
- Remount the speed sensor securely.
- Measure the air gap between the speed sensor and tone ring teeth. Repeat in at least two more wheel positions to ensure that the gap does not vary as the wheel is turned.
NOTE: Feeler gauges can be mounted to a welding rod and inserted between the vanes of the front disc brake hub and rotor to measure the air gap precisely.
Is the gap consistent and less than 1.78 mm (0.070 inch)?
> Yes
Replace the speed sensor. Go to Pinpoint Test LL5. LL5 Recheck Front Left Speed Sensor Output
> No
Gap is greater than 1.78 mm (0.70 inch). Air gap is too large. Replace the tone ring. Go to Pinpoint Test LL5. LL5 Recheck Front Left Speed Sensor Output
Gap is not consistent. Tone ring is not pressed on straight or the axle end play is too great. Go to Pinpoint Test LL6. LL6 Resolve Inconsistent Air Gap Concern
