Timing Chain: Service and Repair
NOTE: Ford does not provide a TDC (Top Dead Center) mark or determination procedure for this engine in this vehicle.
ALLDATA users have reported success using aftermarket tools to determine TDC on this engine.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect ground cable at battery and set aside.
2. Remove engine front cover.
3. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) and the timing marks are aligned as illustrated.
4. Check timing chain deflection for excessive wear.
5. Slide camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain forward and remove as an assembly.
Timing Gear Timing Marks:
6. Clean timing cover and oil pan sealing surfaces of all gasket material and silicone sealer.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean and inspect all parts before installation.
2. Slide camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain on as an assembly with timing marks aligned as illustrated.
3. Install timing chain sprocket bolt and crankshaft pulley retaining washer. Tighten bolt to 55-70 Nm (41-52 ft. lbs.). Lubricate chain and sprockets with engine oil.
NOTE: The timing chain sprocket bolt has a drilled oil passage for timing chain lubrication. If damaged, do not replace with standard bolt. Clean oil passage with solvent.
4. Inspect crankshaft front seal for burrs or cuts. If required, replace seal using Front Cover Seal Installer T70P-6B070-A.
5. Position engine front cover gasket onto cylinder block alignment dowels.
6. Install engine front cover onto cylinder block using caution to not damage crankshaft front seal.
7. Install retaining bolts and tighten.
8. Install oil pan and new oil pan gasket.
9. Install water pump if removed.
10. Install crankshaft vibration damper and crankshaft pulley.
11. Install front end accessory drive components.
12. Fill crankcase with the correct viscosity and weight engine oil.
13. Fill and bleed cooling system.
CAUTION: This engine has aluminum components and requires a special corrosion-inhibiting coolant formulation to avoid radiator damage.
14. Connect battery ground cable.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
15. Start engine and check for coolant, oil and exhaust leaks.
