Steering Control Module: Description and Operation

^ The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) contains a microprocessor which analyzes the vehicle speed sensor input continuously. With this information the GEM controls the power steering auxiliary actuator, thereby regulating the fluid flow to the secondary metering lands in the steering gear control valve.
^ The GEM microprocessor is programmed to perform a self-diagnostic check every 16 milliseconds. If a concern is detected, the microprocessor deactivates its output signals.
^ The GEM is programmed to perform an on-board diagnostic procedure when activated by the service technician.
