Disc Brake System: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: This procedure applies to components of front and rear disc brakes (if equipped).

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Remove wheel and tire assemblies from vehicle.

3. Inspect brake shoes and linings for wear. If the lining is worn to within 3 mm (0.125 inch) of the shoe, replace all four brake shoe and lining assemblies (complete axle set) on front or rear wheels as required.

4. Visually check disc brake caliper. If disc brake caliper housing is leaking, it should be replaced. If a seal is leaking, disc brake caliper must be disassembled and new seals installed. If a caliper piston is seized in bore, a new disc brake caliper is required. Care should be taken not to scratch the caliper piston.

5. Inspect disc brake caliper locating pin to make sure an adequate amount of Silicone Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A exists.

6. Install wheel and tire assembly, using Rotunda Accutorq Lug Nut Sockets 164-R0303 or equivalent on 1/2 inch drive air impact wrench or torque wrench to tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 ft. lbs.).

CAUTION: Failure to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern may result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.

7. Disc brake rotor service procedure.
