Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Service and Repair
REMOVALThe Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is attached to the inner flange cover located inside the intake air system.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected or reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its fuel trim. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the fuel trim.
2. Release band clamp to separate outer cover from engine air cleaner.
3. Pull back wire convolute near grommet of intake air system.
4. Pull grommet out of cover and slide down the wire.
5. Remove inner flange cover containing MAF within intake air system outer cover.
6. Disconnect wiring connector to MAF sensor.
7. Remove retaining nuts securing MAF sensor to inner flange cover. Use care not to allow studs to back out from inner flange cover.
8. Remove MAF sensor.
9. Replace screen if damaged.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean screen and sealing surfaces of inner flange cover.
2. Position screen between inner flange cover and new MAF sensor.
3. Install retaining nuts. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb in).
4. Connect wiring connector to MAF sensor.
5. Align notch notation of inner flange cover with actual notch in outer cover and install. The MAF sensor connector will align with the opening in the outer cover.
6. Slide grommet up wire and insert into cover.
CAUTION: The grommet used to seal the opening in the outer cover for the electrical wire must be fully installed and the air outlet tube must be securely fastened. Otherwise unmetered air will enter the engine.
7. Gently pull extra wire back out through grommet.
8. Cover the wire with the convolute.
9. Align engine air cleaner (containing filter) with outer cover. Secure with band clamp.
10. Reconnect battery ground cable.
11. Start engine and check for air leaks and correct sensor operation.
