Starter Drive/Bendix: Testing and Inspection
CAUTION: Do not wash the starter drive because the solvent will wash out the lubricant causing starter drive to slip. Use a brush or compressed air to clean the starter drive, armature, brush, and gear assemblies, drive end housing, pole pieces and planet gears. Wash all other parts in solvent and dry.1. Examine gears, spline on output shaft, and drive pinion for chipped, broken or worn conditions. Replace if required.
2. Inspect the entire circumference of the ring gear for damage when the starter drive gear teeth are damaged. The flywheel ring gear pattern will usually be found in two places around the ring gear. If the starter drive gear or ring gear show signs of excessive wear or milling, they must be replaced.
