Test Notes
Normal OperationUnder normal circumstances, the air bag diagnostic monitor expects no circuit on Pin C232-17 of the air bag diagnostic monitor. This feature was replaced with the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester, and the memory clear connector was removed from the system. However, some vehicles have maintained the memory clear connector for redundancy. The memory clear circuit was used to clear the air bag diagnostic module's nonvolatile random access memory contents and retrieve stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) by temporarily shorting Pin C232-17 to ground. If Pin C232-17 is improperly shorted to ground, the air bag diagnostic monitor will store in memory a DTC B1923 and flash Lamp Fault Code (LFC) 23 on the air bag indicator.
If the short to ground on Pin C232-17 is repaired or intermittent, the air bag diagnostic monitor will store a DTC B1923 in memory.
Possible Causes
Improper grounding of the memory clear circuit can be caused by:
- a wiring harness fault causing connection to the normally unused Pin C232-17.
