Flow of Diagnosis
1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the speed control system to duplicate the condition.2. Inspect to determine if one of the mechanical or electrical concerns apply:
VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Mechanical
- Inspect and verify that:
- actuator cable is attached to throttle lever bracket ball stud or nailhead.
- actuator cable is adjusted properly without holding the throttle open or increasing idle speed.
- throttle linkage operates freely and smoothly when connected to the actuator cable and speed control servo.
Electrical
- Verify proper horn operation.
- Verify stoplamp operation.
- Check fuse junction panel Fuse 15 (15 A), Fuse 30 (15 A) and Fuse 7 (15 A), 16 (20 A).
- Inspect and verify that:
- connections are complete with no loose wires or terminals.
- wiring is not broken, shorted or corroded.
- wiring is not misrouted.
3. If inspection reveals obvious concerns, correct the concerns before proceeding.
4. Perform New Generation Speed Control Self-Test.
To enter Self-Test:
a. Fully engage parking brake. Make sure brake pedal is released.
b. Begin static portion of self-test by pressing and holding speed control OFF switch.
c. Turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN. The CRUISE indicator on the instrument cluster will flash once to indicate the speed control module has entered diagnostic mode. If the CRUISE indicator does not flash repeat Steps 1-3. If the CRUISE indicator still does not flash, diagnose the CRUISE indicator.
d. Release the OFF switch.
e. The CRUISE indicator will flash as each switch is pressed while performing self-test. Press each switch in the order described while observing CRUISE indicator for a flash. Note any switch activation that does not cause a flash.
Within 5 seconds of turning the ignition switch to RUN:
- Press the ON switch.
- Press the RESUME switch.
- Press the COAST switch.
- Press the SET/ACCEL switch.
NOTE: The ON switch must be pressed within 5 seconds after entering diagnostic mode or the speed control module will return to normal operating state and self-test must be repeated.
f. If the CRUISE indicator does not flash for an individual switch, refer to the Symptom Chart to diagnose the inoperative switch function. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
Repeat the speed control self-test after the service is complete.
Code 0-5:
g. After all switches have been pressed correctly in sequence the CRUISE indicator will flash a code. Refer to the Speed Control Flash Code Index for service.
h. Immediately following a passed static test (one flash), the speed control module will perform a dynamic test by actuating the throttle lever from 1 mm (0.04 In) to 10 mm (0.40 In) of travel from the idle position. During this test observe throttle movement and check for:
- binding or sticking speed control actuator cable.
- proper connection of speed control actuator cable.
- throttle returns to idle position.
WARNING: THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE IN THE RUN POSITION WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE TRANSAXLE SELECTOR LEVER MUST BE IN THE PARK POSITION TO PERFORM NEW GENERATION SPEED CONTROL SELF-TEST. TEST RESULTS WILL BE INACCURATE IF THESE CONDITIONS ARE NOT CORRECT.
If a concern is identified, service as required. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position after the dynamic test is completed.
5. If the concern(s) remains after the inspection, determine the symptom(s) and go to Symptom Chart. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
