Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
NOTE: The mass air flow sensor is attached to the inner flange cover located inside the engine air cleaner cover.
2. Remove air cleaner outlet tube.
3. Release band clamp to separate engine air cleaner cover from engine air cleaner.
4. Pull back wire convolute near grommet of engine air cleaner cover.
5. Pull grommet out of engine air cleaner cover and slide down the wire.
6. Remove inner flange cover containing mass air flow sensor within engine air cleaner cover.
7. Disconnect wiring connector to mass air flow sensor.
8. Remove retaining nuts securing mass air flow sensor to inner flange cover. Use care not to allow studs to back out from inner flange cover.
9. Remove mass air flow sensor.
10. Replace screen if damaged.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean screen and sealing surfaces of inner flange cover.
2. Position screen between inner flange cover and new mass air flow sensor.
3. Install retaining nuts. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb in).
4. Connect wiring connector to mass air flow sensor.
5. Align notch notation of inner flange cover with actual notch in engine air cleaner cover and install. The mass air flow sensor connector will align with the opening in the outer cover.
6. Slide grommet up wires and insert into engine air cleaner cover.
CAUTION: The grommet used to seal the opening in the engine air cleaner cover for the electrical wiring must be fully installed and the air cleaner outlet tube must be securely fastened. Otherwise unmetered air will enter the engine.
7. Gently pull extra wires back out through grommet.
8. Cover the wires with the convolute.
9. Align engine air cleaner (containing Air Cleaner element (ACL element) with engine air cleaner cover. Secure with band clamp.
10. Install air cleaner outlet tube.
11. Reconnect battery ground cable.
12. Start engine and check for vacuum leaks and correct operation of the mass air flow sensor.
