Ignition Lock Drive Gear
REMOVALWARNING: THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect positive battery cable and wait one minute for backup power supply energy to be depleted.
WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT NECESSARY FOR SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY. TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED PRIOR TO SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY SYSTEM COMPONENTS.
3. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position. Using a 1/8 inch drift, press lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch lock cylinder.
4. Remove bearing retainer by inserting a screwdriver or similar tool with a 90 degree bend on the tip between bearing retainer and steering column lock housing bearing and by prying upward.
CAUTION: Carefully note the position of the bearing retainer prior to removal to prevent damage and ensure proper installation.
5. Insert tip of a screwdriver into Double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing; then rotate 90 degrees. Remove steering column lock housing bearing.
6. Remove steering column lock gear. Carefully note relationship of steering column lock gear to position of rack teeth.
INSTALLATION
1. Position steering column lock gear in base of lock cylinder housing in the same position as that noted during removal procedure. The position of steering column lock gear is correct if last tooth on steering column lock gear is meshed with last tooth on steering column lock lever actuator.
2. Position bearing retainer in steering column lock cylinder housing. Insert tip of a screwdriver into Double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing; then rotate 90 degrees.
3. Press blue plastic bearing retainer into lock steering column lock cylinder housing. Make sure bearing retainer is in its original position.
4. Line up flats of steering column lock gear with flats of washer by pulling down on the steering column lock cam.
5. Install ignition switch lock cylinder.
6. Connect battery ground cable.
7. Prove out air bag system.
8 Check for proper start in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also, check to make sure start circuit cannot be actuated in DRIVE or REVERSE positions and the steering column tube is locked in LOCK position.
