Low/Reverse Servo Assembly

Special Tools:

Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle
3. Remove the transmission pan.

4. Remove the transmission fluid filter.
1 Remove the transmission fluid filter screw.
2 Remove the transmission fluid filter.

5. Remove the low/reverse band servo cover.
1 Remove the low/reverse band servo cover screws.
2 Remove the low/reverse band servo cover and gasket. Discard the low/reverse servo separator plate cover gasket.

6. Remove the lows reverse band servo piston and rod and the low/reverse band servo piston return spring.

Installation
1. Clean and inspect the low/reverse band servo piston bore and the low/reverse band servo piston and rod.

2. NOTE: An A4LD Low/Reverse Servo band Return Spring D4ZZ-7D031-A is to be used only as a test spring.

Install the low/reverse band servo piston and rod into the servo bore along with a low/reverse band servo return spring.

3. Install Servo Rod Selecting Gauge.
1 Install a new low/reverse band servo separator plate cover gasket.
2 Tighten the three screws.

4. Tighten the servo gauge adjusting screw.

5. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry on the transmission case.
1 Position the indicator on the piston pad.
2 Set the dial indicator to zero.

6. NOTE: If the piston travel in this step is 3 - 5.6 mm (0.120 - 0.220 inch), it is within specification. If the piston travel is greater than 5.6 ram (0.220 inch), use the next longer piston and rod. If the piston travel is less than 3 mm (0.120 inch), use the next shorter piston and rod.

Back out the servo gauge adjusting screw until it bottoms out on the tool. Record the distance the servo piston traveled.

7. CAUTION: Make sure the test spring is removed after this step.

Use the above procedure to check the piston travel with the newly selected low/reverse band servo piston and rod (if required) to make sure that the piston travel is 3 - 5.6 mm (0.120 - 0.220 inch). Remove the servo gauge and the low/reverse band servo return spring.

- Grooves are located on low/reverse band servo rod.

8. Install the selected fowl reverse band servo piston and rod.
1 Install the low/reverse band servo piston and rod assembly.
2 Install a new low/reverse band servo separator plate cover gasket.
3 Install the low/reverse band servo cover.
4 Loosely install the low/reverse band servo piston cover screws.

9. Tighten the servo cover screws in the sequence shown.

10. Install the transmission fluid filter.
1 Install the transmission fluid filter.
2 Install the transmission fluid filter screw.

11. Install the transmission fluid pan.
1 Position a new transmission fluid pan gasket on the transmission fluid pan.
2 Install and align the transmission fluid pan. Loosely install the transmission fluid pan screws.

12. Tighten the transmission fluid pan bolts. Use a crisscross sequence to tighten the transmission fluid pan screws.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Connect the battery ground cable.
15. Fill the transmission to the proper fluid level and check for proper transmission operation.
- Use MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or equivalent meeting MERCON V specification.
