SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM DISABLINGAFFECTED VEHICLES:
EXPLORER, F-SERIES OVER 8,500 GVW, MUSTANG AND RANGER
THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE IS A GENERIC GUIDELINE TO DISABLING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM. INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE THROTTLE BRACKET AND CABLE ARRANGEMENT MAY LOOK DIFFERENT THAN THE ILLUSTRATIONS SHOWN.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Open hood.
2. Locate speed control cable.
3. Locate imprinted part number on speed control cable. See Figure 1.
4. Locate build date code at the end of the part number. See Figure 1.
NOTE:
If build date is illegible, proceed to SERVICE PROCEDURE.
5. Cross reference build date code with the key below:
BUILD DATE CODE KEY:
(XXX X X)
First position (three digits) = day number of year, e.g. 012 = January 12; 335 = December 1
Second position = supplier identification
Third position = year, e.g. 8 = 1998; 9 = 1999
1. If the build date code is December 1 1998(335 AB) or later, NO SERVICE ACTION IS REQUIRED. Return vehicle to customer.
NOTE:
MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT YEAR CODE, AS THE DAY CODE WILL START OVER ON JANUARY 1, 1999 (001 A9).
2. If the build date code is November 30, 1998 (334 A8) or earlier, the speed control system must be disabled. PROCEED TO SERVICE PROCEDURE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Locate accelerator cable bracket. See Figure 2.
WARNING
DO NOT DAMAGE ACCELERATOR CABLE WHEN PERFORMING THIS STEP.
2. Cut speed control cable on the throttle body side of bracket retainer. See Figure 2.
3. Disconnect speed control cable end from throttle body linkage and discard. See Figure 2.
WARNING
FAILURE TO REMOVE CABLE END MAY RESULT IN A STUCK THROTTLE.
