Principles of Operation
Instrument Cluster and Panel Backlighting - DimmableThe panel dim switch allows the brightness level of backlights and displays to be adjusted dependent on ignition switch position. When the headlamp switch is in the OFF position or the autolamp switch is in the ON position with the autolamp feature inactive, displays will be illuminated at maximum daytime brightness while backlights will not be illuminated.
When the headlamp switch is in the parking lamps ON, headlamps ON or the autolamps ON position and the autolamp feature is active, synchronized dimming of the backlights and displays can occur with the panel dim switch.
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the audio unit, message center and odometer displays will be dimmable. With the ignition switch in the ACC position or with accessory delay feature enabled (ignition switch in the OFF position), only the audio unit display will be dimmable.
When the courtesy lamp mode switch (part of the panel dim switch) is in the FOOT or OFF position, the synchronized dimming will be set at a 3/4 brightness level while the DOME position will provide maximum brightness.
All backlighting will be disabled when the battery saver function has been activated. For additional information, refer to Interior Lighting system.
Non-Dimmable (Fixed) Backlighting
The front power door lock and front power window switches receive illumination power from the accessory delay relay. For additional information regarding the accessory delay feature, refer to Interior Lighting system.
Fault Management
The dimmable backlighting will default to full intensity if any of the following occur:
^ courtesy lamp mode switch failure
^ panel dim switch failure
^ backlighting intensity and dimming curve with headlamps command (ON/OFF) produces invalid data
