Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Remove the valve cover.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Note:
^ The left-hand engine mount isolator must be removed to provide the clearance required to remove the right side push rods from the engine.
^ The mounting nuts on the right side engine mount must be loosened to allow the engine to pivot while it is being lifted.
^ The engine must be raised in order to provide the clearance to remove the engine mount isolator.
^ The engine can be raised by using special tool 164-R6241 on the vibration damper assembly.
Remove the left-hand engine mount isolator.
1. Remove the nuts.
2. Remove the two mounting bolts.
3. Using the special tool, raise the engine and remove the isolator.
4. Lower the engine until the oil pan rests on the crossmember. Remove the special tool and lower the vehicle.
5. Remove the 16 rocker arm bolts, the eight rocker arm assemblies, and the push rods.
6. Note: Be careful when removing the rocker arm snap retaining clip. Do not lose the rocker arm steel ball.
Remove the snap retaining clip.
7. Remove the rocker arm pedestal from the rocker arm.
8. Remove the steel ball from the rocker arm.
Installation
1. Place the steel ball in the rocker arm cup and lubricate with clean engine oil.
2. Place the rocker arm pedestal on the steel ball, and the rocker arm.
3. Snap the retaining clip over the rocker arm pedestal groove.
4. Lubricate the push rod ends with engine oil and install the push rod, copper end up.
5. CAUTION: Make sure to follow the next step of this procedure to prevent bent valves.
Rotate the engine until the mark on the crankshaft damper is at 11 o'clock, to prevent damage when installing the intake rocker arm and exhaust rocker arm.
6. Note: Both the left and right side rocker arms and push rods are installed the same way. Only the left side is shown.
Install the eight push rods, the eight rocker arms and the 16 rocker arm bolts.
7. Install the valve cover.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Note:
^ The engine must be raised in order to provide the clearance to install the engine mount isolator.
^ The engine can be raised by using special tool 164-R6241 on the vibration damper assembly.
Install the left-hand engine mount insulator.
1. Using the special tool, raise the engine until the engine mount insulator can be positioned.
2. Install the insulator to bracket mounts.
3. Lower the engine and install the engine mount retaining nuts.
10. Tighten the right-hand engine mount retaining nuts to specification.
11. Remove the special tool and lower the vehicle.
