Camshaft Bearings
Special Tools:
1. Remove the engine.
2. CAUTION: Use care when pushing pistons to tops of cylinders to prevent damage to piston cooling oil jets. Use connecting rod installation guides (rubber hose) or equivalent to protect rod bolts.
Push the pistons to the tops of the cylinders.
3. Remove the flywheel.
4. Remove the crankshaft.
5. Remove the camshaft.
6. Assemble the puller screw and extension, if necessary, and install on the expanding mandrel. Wrap a cloth around the threads of the puller screw to protect the front camshaft bearing or camshaft bearing bore. Tighten the pulling nut against the thrust bearing and pulling plate to remove the camshaft bearing. Make sure to hold a wrench on the end of the puller screw to prevent it from turning.
7. Using the camshaft bearing set, select the correct size expanding collet and backup nut and assemble on the expanding mandrel. With the expanding collet collapsed, install the collet assembly in the camshaft bearing, and tighten the backup nut on the expanding mandrel until the collet fits the camshaft bearing.
8. Repeat the procedure for each camshaft bearing. To remove the front camshaft bearing, install the puller screw from the rear of the cylinder block.
9. CAUTION: Failure to use the correct expanding collet can cause severe camshaft bearing damage. Make sure the front camshaft bearing is installed to the specified distance below the front face of the cylinder block.
Position new camshaft bearings at the camshaft bearing bores with oil holes aligned, and press in place with the camshaft bearing set. Be sure to center the pulling plate and puller screw to avoid damage to the camshaft bearing.
10. Make sure each camshaft bearing oil hole aligns with the oil hole in the camshaft bearing bore. Use a length of wire to verify oil hole alignment.
11. Note: It is not necessary to check connecting rod and main bearing clearances when installing camshaft bearings.
Install the crankshaft.
12. Install the flywheel.
13. Install the camshaft.
14. Install the engine into the vehicle.
