Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

Special Tools:






Removal
All vehicles
1. Prepare the vehicle for crankshaft vibration damper removal.
1. Install a suitable memory saver.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable(s).
3. Remove the radiator.
4. Remove the drive belt.





2. Check the crankshaft vibration damper runout.
1. Remove the paint from the face of the crankshaft vibration damper at four points 90 degrees apart.
2. Attach the special tool to the cylinder block. Position the special tool on one of the unpainted surfaces.
3. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the crankshaft forward. Zero the dial indicator.

4. Note: Pry the crankshaft at the same point and in only one direction to eliminate possible error caused by crankshaft end play.

Rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees. Pry the crankshaft forward. Record the measurement. Repeat at each unpainted surface.
^ If the runout exceeds specification, install a new crankshaft vibration damper.

Vehicles with manual transmission
3. Prevent the crankshaft from turning.
1. Chock the drive wheels.
2. Set the parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in gear.

Vehicles with automatic transmission
4. Prevent the crankshaft from turning.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Chock the drive wheels.
3. Remove four bolts and the torque converter access cover.
4. Using a suitable flywheel holding tool, have an assistant bar the engine.

All vehicles





5. Remove the bolt and washer.





6. Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft vibration damper.








7. Using a suitable protractor, measure the angle between the timing mark and the center of the key way. If the angle does not meet specification, install a new crankshaft vibration damper.





8. Using the special tools and special tool 308-092, remove the crankshaft damper wear ring.
1. Assemble the special tools and special tool 308-092.
2. Tighten special tool 308-092 until the crankshaft damper wear ring is pulled free from the hub of the crankshaft vibration damper.

Installation
All vehicles





1. Using the special tools and a ball peen hammer, install the new crankshaft damper wear ring.
1. Insert the crankshaft damper wear ring in the special tools.
2. Position the special tools and crankshaft damper wear ring into the crankshaft vibration damper. Using a ball peen hammer, seat the crankshaft damper wear ring into the crankshaft vibration damper.

Vehicles with automatic transmission
2. Using a suitable flywheel holding tool, have an assistant lock out the engine.

All vehicles





3. Install the special tool.





4. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft vibration damper.
^ Apply RTV Silicone Sealant F5TZ-19G204-AB or equivalent meeting Ford specification NAVSTR D15-5012 Type II to the crankshaft keyway prior to installing the crankshaft vibration damper.





5. Install the washer and bolt.

Vehicles with manual transmission
6. Place the transmission in neutral. Remove the chocks.

Vehicles with automatic transmission
7. Install the torque converter access cover and bolts. Remove the chocks. Lower the vehicle.

All vehicles
8. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1. Install the drive belt.
2. Install the radiator.
3. Check the drive belt for correct adjustment.
4. Connect the battery ground cable(s).
5. Remove the memory saver.
6. Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Repair as necessary.
