Vehicle Identification Number






IDENTIFICATION CODES
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.







Vehicle Identification Number
The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.
^ 1FM - Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle.
^ 1FT - Ford Motor Company, USA, truck, completed vehicle.
^ 2FM - Ford Motor Company, Canada, multi-purpose vehicle.
^ 2FT - Ford Motor Company, Canada, truck, completed vehicle.
^ 3FM - Ford Motor Company, Mexico, multi-purpose vehicle.
^ 3FT - Ford Motor Company, Mexico, truck, completed vehicle.







The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVW code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes).
^ M - 5,200 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ L - 5,240 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ P - 5,260 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ S - 5,280 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ N - 5,320 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ R - 5,340 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ T - 5,360 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ U - 5,420 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ W - 5,500 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ X - 5,520 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ Y - 5,560 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ F - 5,600 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ Z - 5,660 pounds GVWR (wagon).
^ Z - 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags.
^ D - 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR with driver and passenger air bags and driver and front passenger side air bags.
^ 3 - 5,540 pounds GVWR (van).







Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type.
^ A50 - Windstar, Base, Wagon.
^ A54 - Windstar, Van.
^ A51 - Windstar, LX, Wagon.
^ A52 - Windstar, SE, Wagon.
^ A53 - Windstar, SEL, Wagon.
^ A55 - Windstar, EC-Low, Wagon.
^ A56 - Windstar, EC-High, Wagon.







The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders.
^ U - 3.0L, V6, Gas.
^ 4 - 3.8L, OHV, EFI, V6 Gas.







The ninth VIN position is a check digit.







The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
^ Y - 2000.







The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.
^ S - Allen Park (Allen Park, Michigan).
^ B - Oakville (Oakville, Ontario).







The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.
^ A00001 - E99999 - Ford Division.
