Removal

Special Tools:




Special Tools:






1. If equipped, turn the air suspension switch off.
2. Remove the battery and tray.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.





4. Disconnect the digital transmission range TR sensor electrical connector.





5. Disconnect the AX4S transaxle electrical connector.





6. Disconnect the harness retainer.





7. Disconnect the shift cable.





8. Remove the cable from the bracket.
9. Remove the hood.
10. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly.





11. Remove the front upper radiator shield.





12. On vehicles equipped with the 3.8L engine, install the special tool.





13. On vehicles equipped with the 3.8L engine, install the RH lifting hook.





14. On vehicles equipped with the 3.8L, engine, install the 3 Bar Engine Support.





15. On vehicles equipped with the 3.8L, engine, install the Spreader Bar.





16. On vehicles equipped with the 3.0L engine, install the LH lifting hook.





17. On vehicles equipped with the 3.0L engine, install the RH lifting hook.





18. On vehicles equipped with the 3.0L engine, install the three bar support.





19. On vehicles equipped with the 3.0L engine, install the spreader bar.





20. Disconnect the harness retainer.





21. Remove the upper fluid filler tube.





22. Remove the clips.





23. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove the cooler line from fitting.





24. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.





25. Remove the rear transaxle mount nut.
26. Raise and support the vehicle.
27. Remove the front wheels.
28. Drain the transmission fluid by lowering the transaxle pan.

29. Note: The transaxle fluid pan does not need to be torqued in this step.

Install the transaxle pan.

30. Remove the three way catalytic converter assembly.
31. Remove the sub frame assembly.





32. Install the special tool.





33. Remove the ground strap.





34. Note: The use of mechanic's wire will aid in positioning the starter out of the way.

Remove the starter and position it out of the way.





35. Remove the RH inspection cover bolt.





36. Remove the inspection cover.





37. Remove and discard the four nuts.





38. Note: The use of mechanic's wire will aid in positioning the halfshafts out of the way. Using the special tools, remove the LH halfshaft from the transaxle and position out of the way.





39. Note: The use of mechanic's wire will aid in positioning the halfshafts out of the way. Remove the right halfshaft from the transaxle and position out of the way.





40. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor connector.





41. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.





42. Position the high lift transmission jack under the transaxle.





43. Remove the right lower retaining bolt.





44. Remove the left lower retaining bolt.





45. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.
46. Lower the transaxle assembly from the engine compartment.





47. Remove the rear engine support.





48. Remove the bracket.
49. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing/cleaning.
