Transmission Cooler: Service and Repair

Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Cooler-Oil-to-Air Fluid Cooler

Removal





All vehicles

1. Remove the upper bolts by inserting a long extension and socket through the front grille and bumper.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.





4X4 vehicles

3. Remove the bolts and the skid plate.





All vehicles

4. Remove bolts and the air deflector.





Vehicles with 4R100 transmission

5. CAUTION: Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XC3Z-7Bl55-BA) every 48,000 kin (30,000 miles) and always as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7Bl55-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit as pail of a transmission overhaul or exchange.

NOTE: The inline transmission fluid filter, if so equipped, is attached to the fluid cooler return tube. The fluid cooler return tube runs from the Oil-To-Air (OTA) transmission fluid cooler to the rear transmission cooler tube case fitting.

Remove, and discard the inline transmission fluid filter, if so equipped.
6. If not done previously, carry out the transmission fluid cooler flow test procedure.





All vehicles

7. CAUTION: Do not attempt to backflush and clean the OTA transmission fluid cooler. Install a new OTA transmission fluid cooler as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. Failure to follow these directions may result in transmission damage.

Remove the OTA transmission fluid cooler.
1 Disconnect the fluid cooler tubes from the fluid cooler.
2 Remove the bolts and the fluid cooler.

Installation





All vehicles

1. CAUTION: Do not attempt to backflush and clean the OTA transmission fluid cooler. Install a new OTA transmission fluid cooler as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. Failure to follow these directions may result in transmission damage.

Install the OTA transmission fluid cooler.
1 Position the fluid cooler in the vehicle.
2 Install the lower bolts.
3 Connect the fluid cooler tubes to the fluid cooler.





Vehicles with 4R100 transmission

2. CAUTION: Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XC3Z-7Bl55-BA) every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) and always as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange. If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7Bl55-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit as part of a transmission overhaul or exchange.

CAUTION: Failure to follow the instructions supplied with the inline transmission fluid filter kit can cause transmission damage.

Verify that the flow arrow on the filter points toward the transmission.

Install a new inline transmission fluid filter (XM-713155-13A). If the vehicle was not equipped with an inline fluid filter install a new inline transmission fluid filter kit (XC3Z-7B155-AA) according to the instructions supplied with the kit. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler flow test procedure to verify that there is correct fluid flow through the new inline fluid filter.





All vehicles

3. Position the air deflector and install the bolts.





4X4 vehicles

4. Position the skid plate and install the bolts (4x4 only).

All vehicles
5. Lower the vehicle.





6. Install the upper bolts by inserting a long extension and socket through the front grille and bumper.

7. CAUTION: Do not use any fluid approved for MERCON V application. Using a fluid rated for MERCON V may cause internal damage in MERCON only applications.

Fill the transmission with the specified type and quantity of transmission fluid.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON V Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or equivalent meeting MERCON V specifications.
8. Check for leaks.
