IDENTIFICATION CODES

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.

World Manufacturer Identifier:

The first three Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.
^ 1FM - Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle

Brake And Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR):

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) code, all vehicles use hydraulic brakes. This code may also identify the vehicle safety restraint system.
^ R - 4,740 pounds GVWR, Sport, two-door, 4x2
^ M - 4,900 pounds GVWR, Sport, two-door, 4x4
^ W - 5,660 pounds GVWR, Sport Trac, four-door, 4x2
^ B - 5,380 pounds GVWR, Sport Trac, four-door, 4x2
^ T - 5,840 pounds GVWR, Sport Trac, four-door, 4x4
^ 6 - 5,560 pounds GVWR, Sport Trac, four-door, 4x4
^ Y - 4,001-5,000 pounds GVWR (less side impact air bags)
^ Z - 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR (less side impact air bags)
^ C - 4,001-5,000 pounds GVWR (with driver and front passenger side impact air bags)
^ D - 5,001-6,000 pounds GVWR (with driver and front passenger side impact air bags)

In addition to the above listed codes, the following may apply:
^ A - Driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Line, Series And Body Type:

Positions five through seven indicate the vehicle line, series and body type.
^ U60 - Sport, two-door, 4x2
^ U70 - Sport, two-door, 4x4
^ U67 - Sport Trac, four-door, 4x2
^ U77 - Sport Trac, four-door, 4x4

Engine Type:

The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders.
^ E - 4.0L, EFI, SOHC, six cylinder
^ K - 4.0L (flex-fuel), six cylinder

Check Digit:

The ninth VIN position is a government assigned check digit.

Model Year:

The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
^ 1 - 2001

Assembly Plant:

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.
^ U - Louisville (Louisville, Kentucky)

Build Sequence:

VIN positions twelve through seventeen are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial number and warranty number.
