Service Installation of Safety Belts

With the vehicle stationary and on level ground take firm hold of the safety belt webbing (on the tongue side of the safety belt upper anchor) and pull out quickly. The retractor should lock within 0.25 meter (10 inches), preventing further webbing payout. Any safety belt retractor from which it is possible to extract further webbing must not be used. A new safety belt must be installed.

The ALR function of the passenger safety belts can be checked as follows:
Extend the safety belt, latching the tongue into the buckle across the empty seat, without any slack in the safety belt webbing. With the seat (if adjustable) fully down and in its rearward most position, and the backrest in an upright position (front seats), the height adjuster (front seats) should be at its lowest setting.

PULL on the diagonal webbing until all the webbing has paid Out, engaging the ALR mode. Allow the webbing to freely retract in the ALR mode, with the retracting force setting the proper safety belt adjustment.

PULL on the safety belt webbing to check that the retractor force is setting the correct safety belt adjustment.

PULL on the safety belt webbing to check that the retractor has remained in the ALR mode. If the belt has not locked, INSTALL a new safety belt assembly. TEST the system for normal operation. (The safety belt should remain locked in the ALR mode across the empty seat). Verify the safety belt automatically disengages from the ALR mode. RELEASE the buckle and allow the safety belt webbing to retract to its stowed position.

From this position PULL on the safety belt webbing to check the retractor has automatically disengaged the ALR mode (the webbing should extract without resistance). If the safety belt remains locked, INSTALL a new safety belt assembly.
