Starting System: Description and Operation






Starter Motor
The starter motor:
^ is a permanent-magnet, gear reduction, 12V dc motor.
^ has an integral starter solenoid.

Starter Relay
The starter relay:
^ Is a mini ISO relay.
A. switches power to the starter solenoid to engage the starter motor when it receives a START signal from the ignition switch.

Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch
The CPP switch for:
^ manual transmission, closes when the clutch pedal is depressed completing the starting circuit.
^ automatic transmission, a jumper is inserted in place of the CPP switch to complete the circuit.

Anti-Theft Relay (If Equipped)
The anti-theft relay:
^ is a normally closed relay.
^ is grounded by the anti-theft system which opens the relay contacts and disables the starting circuit.

Starter System - Operation
When the ignition switch is turned to the START position the starter relay switches power to the starter solenoid causing the starter motor to engage as long as:
^ the clutch pedal is depressed (manual transmission only).
^ the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor is in PARK or NEUTRAL (automatic transmission only).
^ the anti-theft system is disabled (if equipped).
