Remote Keyless Entry - Unknown Key Code Condition

ELECTRICAL - REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE) - UNABLE TO OBTAIN OR PROGRAM THE KEYLESS ENTRY CODE - KEYLESS ENTRY CODE UNKNOWN - INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE KEY FOB

2001 WINDSTAR
ISSUE
Some vehicles with a keyless entry keypad on the left side door may exhibit a "unable to obtain or program keyless entry code" condition and/or a "intermittent key FOB operation" condition. This may be caused by either a key code card that is lost or key code unknown or by Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module software disabling the key FOB.
ACTION
Inspect and verify condition of either "unable to program or obtain keyless entry code" or "intermittent key FOB operation". Replace the remote keyless entry (RKE) module if necessary. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
FOR INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE KEY FOB, THE CONDITION WILL NOT BE PRESENT AFTER THE KEY PAD (IF EQUIPPED) IS PRESSED OR ANY DOOR IS UNLOCKED.
Refer to the two possible conditions:
UNABLE TO PROGRAM THE KEYLESS ENTRY CODE
1. Perform normal diagnostics for key code condition. Refer to section 501-14 of the Workshop Manual.
2. Use the following procedure to retrieve the key code using WDS (Release B12 or later) or NGS (Release 18 or later).
a. Select 2001 Windstar.
b. Select "DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK".
c. Select "DDM" (DRIVERS DOOR MODULE).
d. Select "PID DATA".
e. Select the "KEYCODE" PID.
f. Select "Start".
The preset factory remote keyless entry (RKE) code will be displayed at this point.
3. If the display reads key code ??????? replace the remote keyless entry (RKE) module with Service Part 1F2Z-15604-GA. This new kit comes with a new key code card and the module.
INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE KEY FOB
1. Perform normal diagnostics for the key FOB per section 501-14 of the Workshop Manual.
2. If normal diagnostics cannot pinpoint the condition, replace the remote keyless entry (RKE) module with Service Part 1F2Z-15604-GA. Be sure to program all the customers key FOBs to the new module.
NOTE
FOR INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF THE KEY FOB, THE CONDITION WILL NOT BE PRESENT AFTER THE KEY PAD (IF EQUIPPED) IS PRESSED OR ANY DOOR IS UNLOCKED.
