Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Engine Front CoverRemoval
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove both valve covers.
3. Remove the radiator and the transmission cooler.
4. Remove the drive belt.
5. Remove the water pump pulley.
6. Remove the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
7. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket.
8. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator solenoid.
9. Remove the idler pulleys.
10. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Remove the brackets.
13. Remove the bracket.
14. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
15. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.
16. Remove the bolts.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
19. Remove the bolts and the stud bolts.
20. Remove the engine front cover from the cylinder block dowel.
Installation
1. NOTE: If the engine front cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner.
Apply silicone gasket and sealant along the cylinder head to block surface and the oil pan to cylinder block surface.
2. Install the engine front cover on the front cover to cylinder block dowel and loosely install the bolts.
3. Tighten the front cover bolts and stud bolts in the sequence shown.
4. Install a new crankshaft front oil seal.
5. Raise and support the vehicle.
6. Loosely install the front bolts.
7. NOTE: Make sure to tighten the bolts in two stages.
Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in two stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
8. Install the CKP sensor.
9. Install the bracket.
10. Install the brackets.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the crankshaft pulley.
13. Install the idler pulleys.
14. Install the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
15. Install the upper radiator hose bracket.
16. Install the CMP sensor.
17. Install the water pump pulley.
18. Install the drive belt.
19. Install the radiator and the transmission cooler.
20. Install the valve covers.
21. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
22. Connect the battery ground cable.
