Removal and Installation

1. Remove the engine appearance cover.

2. Disconnect the speed control cable from the throttle body and the accelerator bracket.

3. Release the speed control cable from the standoff clip, then position the cable aside.

4. Disconnect the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid electrical connector.

5. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid bracket retaining bolt and position the solenoid aside.

6. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.

7. Disconnect the PCV tube from the valve cover.

8. Disconnect the left side fuel charge wiring harness retainers from the valve cover studs.
9. Position the left side of the fuel charging wiring harness away from the valve cover.

10. Remove the engine oil level indicator tube retaining bolt, then position the indicator tube aside.

11. NOTE: There are several kinds of bolts used in fastening the valve cover. The bolts must be installed in their original locations.

Loosen the bolts and remove the valve cover.

12. CAUTION: Do not use metal scraper, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scrapping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

Clean and inspect the mating surface.

13. NOTE: If the valve cover is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply the silicone gasket and sealant in two places where the engine front cover meets the cylinder head.

14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Tighten the valve cover bolts in the sequence shown.
