EGR Valve: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.







2. Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connector.
3. Drain the cooling system.

Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission
4. Remove the transmission.
5. Support the motor with an appropriate jack stand.

CAUTION: Use a block of wood between the oil pan and the jack stand to prevent oil pan damage.

Vehicles equipped with manual transmission







6. Remove the bolts retaining the catalytic converter to the muffler. Discard the exhaust converter outlet gasket.







7. While supporting the exhaust inlet crossover pipe and the catalytic converter assembly, remove the exhaust hanger from the insulator. Position the exhaust assembly aside.
8. Remove the rear driveshaft.
9. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.







10. Remove the six bolts (three on each side) retaining the crossmember to the frame.

WARNING: SECURE THE TRANSMISSION TO THE JACK WITH A SUITABLE SAFETY STRAP. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

11. Lower the transmission enough to allow access to the EGR valve.

All vehicles







12. Disconnect the cooling hose.







13. Remove the bolts and the EGR valve.
^ Discard the gasket.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE: Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install new gaskets.
