Safety Belt Retractor and Pretensioner

SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR AND PRETENSIONER - SPORT

REMOVAL

WARNING:
- The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
- All safety belt assemblies including retractors, buckles, front seat belt buckle support assemblies (slide bar), shoulder belt height adjusters (if so equipped), child safety seat tether attachments, and attaching hardware should be inspected after any collision. All belt assemblies should be replaced unless a qualified technician finds the assemblies show no damage and operate properly. Belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and replaced if either damage or improper operation is noted.



NOTE: Driver side shown, passenger side similar.


1. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.

The side impact sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillars and C-pillars.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).


Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).







3. Remove the front safety belt anchor.
1 Using the special tool, remove the front safety belt anchor bolt.
2 Remove the front safety belt anchor.







4. NOTE: The front shoulder safety belt guide has been removed for clarity.

From behind the front shoulder safety belt guide bolt cover, release the retaining tab and open the cover.







5. Remove the front shoulder safety belt guide.
1 Using the special tool, remove the front shoulder safety belt guide bolt.
2 Remove the front shoulder safety belt guide.







6. Remove the bolt and the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.

INSTALLATION

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions and notes at the beginning of the removal procedure.







1. Install the safety belt retractor and pretensioner.
1 Position the safety belt retractor and pretensioner so the tab aligns to the sheet metal hole.
2 Install the bolt.







2. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the driver side safety belt retractor pretensioner electrical connector.






3. Connect the driver side safety belt pretensioner electrical connector.
4. Connect the battery ground cable.
5. With the restraint system diagnostic tools still installed at the remaining deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure

7. NOTE: Inspect the shoulder safety belt guide cover for damage. If the shoulder safety belt guide cover is damaged or if it does not remain closed, install a new shoulder safety belt guide cover.

Install the safety belt guide.
1 Position the safety belt guide.
2 Install the nut.
3 Fasten the safety belt guide cover in place.







8. Install the safety belt anchor and bolt.

9. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.

Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

10. Connect the battery ground cable.

11. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Prove Out Procedure

12. Check the active restraint system for correct operation.
