Removal

WARNING: Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery cables before disconnecting the electronic air bag control module or any other supplemental restraint system electrical connector. Failure to follow this procedure may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Failure to follow any of the warnings may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when working on the air bag system or handling the air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Do not use radio keycode savers when working on the air bag system. Failure to follow this warning may cause air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Carry a undeployed air bag with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal change of injury. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Place a undeployed air bag on a bench or other surface with the trim cover uppermost. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bags. Failure to follow this instruction may result in air bag deployment and personal injury.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable





2. NOTE: Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.

Centralize the steering and lock it in position.





3. Detach the instrument panel lower panel from the instrument panel.
1 Remove the screws.
2 Release the fastener.





4. Detach the hood release cable and the data link connector (DLC) from the instrument panel lower panel.
^ Remove the instrument panel lower panel.





5. Remove the steering column upper shroud.
^ Using a thin bladed screwdriver, releases the two clips (one each side).





6. Remove the audio control switch (if equipped).
1 Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the locking tang.
2 Disconnect the audio control switch electrical connector.





7. Remove the steering column lower shroud.
1 Release the steering column locking lever (if equipped).
2 Remove the screws.





8. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver, wiper/washer switch and clockspring/steering wheel rotation sensor/speed control electrical connectors.





9. Disconnect the ignition switch and turn signal/flash to pass switch electrical connectors.





10. Detach the wiring harness from the steering column.
1 Release the locating pin.
2 Detach the wiring harness from the column.





11. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear pinion extension.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Release the pinion shaft extension from the steering column.





12. Remove the steering column.
^ Remove the three nyloc nuts.
^ Remove the Torx bolts.

Installation





All vehicles

1. WARNING: When installing the steering column, make sure new nyloc nuts are installed. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.

Install the steering column.





2. WARNING: Install a new steering column pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction, may result in personal injury.

Connect the steering column shaft to the power steering gear pinion extension.
1 Connect the pinion shaft extension to the steering column shaft.
2 Install the bolt.





3. Attach the wiring harness to the steering column.
1 Attach the wiring harness to the steering column.
2 Install the locating pin.





4. Connect the ignition switch and turn signal/flash to pass switch electrical connectors.





5. Connect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver, wiper/washer switch and clockspring/steering wheel rotation sensor/speed control electrical connectors.





6. Install the steering column lower shroud.
1 Lower the steering column locking lever.
2 Install the screws.





7. Install the audio control switch (if equipped).
1 Connect the audio control switch electrical connector.
2 Install the audio control switch.





8. Attach the steering column upper shroud to the lower shroud.





9. Attach the hood release cable and the data link connector (DLC) electrical connector to the instrument panel lower panel.





10. Attach the instrument panel lower panel to the instrument panel.
1 Secure the fastener.
2 Install the screws.
