Exhaust System - Catalytic Converter Heat Shield Loose

MANIFOLD OR CATALYTIC CONVERTER HEAT
SHIELDS LOOSE/MISSING

ISSUE
Some 2002-2004 Focus SVT vehicles may exhibit a loose or missing engine exhaust manifold heat shield, or upper and lower catalytic converter heat shields. This may be caused by the heat shields breaking or corroding at their attachment points.
ACTION
Install a heat shield fastener kit. Replace heat shields only if they are missing or damaged and cannot be reused. Shields with slightly enlarged/corroded mounting holes can be reused. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT SHIELD
1. Remove and discard the six (6) exhaust manifold heat shield attachment screws.
2. Inspect the heat shield.
a. If the heat shield is missing or damaged and cannot be reused, replace the heat shield. Proceed to Steps 3.
b. If the heat shield can be reused, proceed to Steps 6.
3. Remove the engine cooling fan, refer to Workshop Manual, Section 303-03.
4. Remove the heat shield from below the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the radiator fins.
5. Install the new heat shield.
6. Reattach the heat shield using six (6) screws and washers supplied with the heat shield fastener kit.
7. Torque the six (6) screws to 84-102 lb-in (9.5-11.5 N.m).
8. Reinstall the engine cooling fan.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER UPPER AND LOWER
HEAT SHIELDS
1. Remove the catalytic converter assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 309-00.
2. Remove and discard the three (3) attachment screws per heat shield.
3. Replace the heat shield(s) if missing or damaged beyond repair.
4. Attach each heat shield using three (3) screws and washers supplied with the heat shield fastener kit.
5. Torque the three (3) screws on each heat shield to 84-102 lb-in (9.5-11.5 N.m).
6. Reinstall the catalytic converter assembly.
